New Industry Analysis From Castles Technology Finds Merchants Expect More Than Payment Acceptance

Payment acceptance is now the starting point, not the finish line, as merchant expectations of POS fundamentally shift

Vélizy-Villacoublay, France – 11 August 2026. The point of sale is becoming a central part of how UK merchants operate, rather than simply a device used to accept payments, according to new analysis from Castles Technology, leader in Android payment acceptance solutions.

Merchants increasingly expect payment technology to support wider business operations, from customer insight and inventory management to deployment, maintenance and long-term scalability. Payment acceptance has therefore become the starting point compared the previous notion of the finish line.

Contactless cards and mobile wallets now dominate everyday transactions, with around 90% of UK merchants supporting mobile wallets, according to The Payments Association's 2025 merchant survey. The removal of the UK's fixed £100 contactless limit in March 2026 has added further momentum, allowing banks to set their own thresholds or remove them entirely. This opens higher-value transactions to contactless payments in sectors such as hospitality, healthcare and luxury retail.

Meanwhile, another transformation is happening behind the scenes: cloud connectivity, artificial intelligence and real-time transaction data are turning the point of sale into a tool for managing inventory, staffing and customer insight, not simply processing a sale.

The shift plays out differently depending on the merchant. Smaller businesses increasingly prioritise simplicity, affordability and speed of deployment. Cloud-based POS platforms can give cafés, independent retailers and service providers access to sales reporting, inventory management and customer insight without the cost or complexity of extensive infrastructure. Most merchants onboarded through Independent Sales Organisations (ISOs) in the UK are SMEs, typically with annual card turnover below £380,000, according to the Payment Systems Regulator.

Mid-market and enterprise merchants require more sophisticated capabilities. Larger retailers increasingly need payment platforms that integrate with existing enterprise resource planning, customer relationship management and e-commerce systems, while supporting high transaction volumes across physical and digital channels.

Vertical markets add a further layer of complexity as hospitality venues, for example, may require mobile payment acceptance at the table or through self-service kiosks. Transport operators prioritise fast and reliable checkout experiences. Outdoor and high-throughput environments often depend on unattended terminals that can deliver consistent performance in demanding conditions.

The analysis identifies five factors that strongly influence merchant satisfaction and loyalty when selecting POS technology:

  • Reliability and performance;

  • Ease of use;

  • Payment flexibility;

  • Integration with wider business systems; and

  • Transparent pricing and support.

The findings also suggest that changing merchant expectations are reshaping competition among ISOs, which industry estimates suggest now account for more than 50% of new merchant acquisitions for UK card acquirers.

With more than 60 ISOs estimated to be operating in the UK, differentiation increasingly comes from deployment speed, device lifecycle management and ongoing support, rather than the terminal alone. ISOs are also moving beyond basic card acceptance by offering integrated POS solutions, reporting, loyalty programmes, analytics and sector-specific services.

Jean-Philippe Niedergang, Acting Group CEO at Castles Technology, said: "For years, the conversation centred on accepting more payment methods. Today, that is simply the starting point. Merchants expect payment technology to become part of how they run their business. They want terminals that connect with wider operations, can be deployed and managed remotely and continue delivering value long after installation. Hardware has become table stakes."

For ISOs, acquirers and payment providers, meeting these expectations requires more than supplying a device. Large and dispersed terminal estates must be configured, deployed, monitored, maintained, updated and eventually retired responsibly, often across multiple merchants, sectors and operating environments.

Castles Technology supports payment providers through CaSERV, its global managed services platform for large-scale POS estates. CaSERV covers secure warehousing, terminal configuration and deployment, 24/7 multilingual support, device monitoring, maintenance and repair, refurbishment and compliant recycling.

These services help ISOs, acquirers and payment providers improve device availability, standardise operations and scale their merchant services without adding unnecessary cost or operational strain.
