Advisors can add qualified, helpful advice to combat snake oil finfluencers and win more clients
SEATTLE – December 2, 2025 – Although finfluencers have gotten a bad reputation for being ill qualified and doling out incorrect financial advice, Idea Decanter’s Co-Founder Laura Garfield is encouraging advisors to own their expertise to increase their prospect pipeline while flooding the internet with sound financial guidance. She does this through her newly-released book Find Your #finfluence: A Financial Advisor’s Guide to Stand Out & Succeed with Video.
Sixty-five percent of Gen Z follows financial advisors and institutions as well as financial content creators on social media, according to the TIAA Institute. Additionally, 65 percent of millennials used social media to get social advice as per the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia. This presents an opportunity for advisors to reach their audience where they already are and provide practical advice.
“Video is a powerful tool that advisors have at their disposal to save time, build trust and grow their business,” Garfield said. “At a time when advisors are asked to wear a lot of hats, participating in video marketing is one that accomplishes several things at once given that people relate best to people they can see. While becoming true influencers offering credible guidance, advisors would also be strengthening the financial advice profession and spreading awareness about it.”
To create her book, Garfield leveraged advisors she interviewed for her Real Finfluencer podcast series; advisors followed the same process outlined in Garfield’s book, which should serve as a playbook for how advisors can successfully start and continue to generate meaningful and impactful videos. Among Garfield’s advice to advisors is to find the points their niche most wants answers to, which can be done following client meetings, and speaking to one person at a time rather than offering broad-based advice. She also debunks myths including the need for expensive equipment.
